How to Store Wine Properly in Summer – Expert Tips from Soul Wine

Opening a bottle of wine is never just a simple gesture—it’s a moment worth savoring. Whether it’s the highlight of a dinner, a joyful gathering with friends, or a quiet reward after a long day, every bottle carries an experience. But to fully enjoy that experience, proper wine storage is essential from the very beginning.

At Soul Wine, we believe that preserving wine correctly is the first step to elevating your enjoyment. Especially during summer, when heat and temperature fluctuations can easily impact wine quality, understanding the right storage methods becomes more important than ever.

Temperature: Stability Comes First

Temperature is the most critical factor in wine storage. Heat and sudden changes in temperature can cause wine to age too quickly, lose its freshness, and even oxidize prematurely.

Ideally, wine should be stored at a stable temperature between 12–14°C. However, maintaining a range between 12–20°C without drastic fluctuations is already a good practice. Avoid placing wine near windows, direct sunlight, kitchens, or heat sources like radiators. If possible, a wine cabinet is a great investment, but a cool, shaded corner in your home can also work effectively.

Humidity: The Overlooked Key

Humidity plays a vital role in preserving wine, yet it is often ignored. If the air is too dry, corks can shrink, allowing oxygen to enter the bottle and damage the wine. On the other hand, excessive humidity can lead to mold on labels and caps.

The ideal humidity level is between 60% and 75%. You don’t need specialized equipment, but it’s important to avoid overly dry environments (like rooms with constant air conditioning) or overly damp spaces such as poorly ventilated storage areas.

Light: A Silent Enemy

Wine is highly sensitive to light, especially UV rays. Prolonged exposure can degrade its color, aroma, and structure.

Although many wine bottles are made with tinted glass for protection, this is not enough if they are stored in bright environments. Keep your wine in dark spaces such as closed cabinets, wine cellars, or shaded areas away from direct sunlight.

Bottle Position: A Crucial Detail

The way you store your bottles matters more than you might think. Wines sealed with natural cork should always be stored horizontally. This keeps the cork moist and airtight, preventing oxygen from entering the bottle.

If the cork dries out, it can shrink and cause oxidation, leading to a loss of flavor and freshness. However, wines with screw caps or synthetic closures can be stored upright without any issues.

Avoid Vibrations

Constant vibrations can disturb the natural aging process of wine. They prevent sediments from settling properly and can negatively affect the wine’s development.

Avoid placing wine near washing machines, refrigerators, or unstable shelves. A quiet, stable environment helps your wine age gracefully.

What If You Don’t Finish the Bottle?

It’s common, especially in summer, to open a bottle without finishing it. In this case, simply reseal the bottle and store it in the refrigerator—even for red wine.

Cool temperatures help slow down oxidation. For the best quality, consume the remaining wine within 2 to 3 days.

Keep It Simple, Keep It Right

Wine storage doesn’t have to be complicated. By following a few essential principles—stable temperature, proper humidity, minimal light exposure, and correct bottle positioning—you can significantly extend the life and quality of your wines.

At Soul Wine, we are always here to accompany your journey with wine—from selection to storage and beyond. Because every great bottle deserves to be enjoyed at its very best.

Enjoy your wine. Enjoy the moment.
